The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Strange Invisible Perfumes launched its zodiac series in 2012, and Scorpio arrived as a meditation on fixed intensity. Alexandra Balahoutis designed this fragrance for people who understand that some scents aren't meant to please, they're meant to last. The sign of the scorpion carries a reputation for depth that most people find uncomfortable. This composition leans into that. Smoke, warmth, and a certain stubbornness run through every phase, refusing to soften into something safer or more approachable. Palo Santo and vetiver soften what could have been aggressive. They don't tame it, they give it somewhere to settle.
The pairing of sweet warmth with frankincense creates an unexpected tension in botanical perfumery. That quiet sweetness could undercut the leather, but the smoke holds the line, meditative and resinous, almost austere. Vetiver and palo santo both respect and soften the iron will of the cinnamon without domesticating it. The composition builds around contrast: spice that announces itself, then a base of warm wood and leather that refuses to apologize for taking up space. Each layer has somewhere to rest, and the structure holds because nothing competes for dominance.
The evolution
The opening is all heat, cinnamon asserting itself with an almost aggressive directness. No apology in the first ten minutes. Then the smoke arrives, frankincense threading through the spice like a counterargument. The leather reads warm rather than harsh, wrapping around the cinnamon with an unexpected gentleness that tempers what could have been one-note intensity. As the minutes accumulate, the composition reveals layers, each one building on the last. The drydown settles into cinnamon warmth over wood and skin-warmed leather, a trace of smoke lingering but never aggressive. The intimacy of the scent stays close, holding its character without fanfare, a quiet presence that refuses to demand attention yet lingers with undeniable conviction.
Cultural impact
The zodiac series invites wearers to find resonance between personality and scent. Each fragrance in the collection carries an intensity suited to those who appreciate bold choices. The compositions favor depth over mass appeal, creating signatures that linger rather than announce. This approach speaks to a certain kind of wearer: someone who values authenticity over approval. The intensity of the scent reflects this philosophy, offering something that rewards attention rather than disappearing into the background. It finds its audience among those who want fragrance to mean something personal rather than performative.
