The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Caitlin Hayes named this one Sitting on the Edge of a Cloud, and the name does the heavy lifting. Released in 2022 through her line Sorce, the fragrance sketches a moment between earth and sky. The piece reads like a page from a private notebook, a fleeting sensory event captured and bottled. The official copy frames it as a depiction of sunlight shifting between clouds, that transient band of brightness that appears, holds, then dissolves. Hayes translated that visual into a composition built on citrus brightness and a weightless sweetness. The mandarin and pink grapefruit open with a clean, tart snap, almost electric against skin, while the cotton candy note hovers above like vapor. There is no syrupy thickness here, no gourmand heaviness.
What makes the structure interesting is the placement of cotton candy alongside real fruit notes. The sugar reads spun and airy rather than dense. Mandarin and pink grapefruit provide the tart frame, while ambrette and amyris lend a skin-like muskiness that keeps the whole thing from feeling like a confection. Palo santo and sandalwood ground the drydown in something almost spiritual, giving the cloud a surface to rest on. The interplay between these materials is what sets the composition apart. The fruit acids brighten the opening without souring it.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are a pop of citrus, almost aggressive in their brightness. Mandarin and pink grapefruit arrive first, tart and awake, with the faintest whiff of cotton candy sweetness threading through like a kite string. There is a quick moment where the coconut water appears, light and slightly creamy, before the heart opens into ambrette's musky softness and a fuller tonka warmth. The citrus eventually fades to a memory, yielding ground to the deeper materials. Palo santo and sandalwood take over, layered over a cotton candy residue that has melted into something closer to warm sugar on skin. What lingers is a soft, woody-musky sweetness that reads powdery and intimate. On fabric the next morning, it is still there: faint, golden, like the smell of a pillow that remembers a good dream.
Cultural impact
Sitting on the Edge of a Cloud occupies a particular place in indie perfume discourse: the sweet-but-airy composition that refuses to commit to gourmand territory. Wearers respond to it in sensory, place-based terms, reaching for images of golden light, frozen treats, summer afternoons, that specific suspended feeling when the day seems to pause. Its cotton candy and palo santo pairing gives it an off-center character. The sweetness is real but it never overwhelms, never tips into the sticky territory of typical dessert fragrances.
