Why it exists.
The beginning
C'est Noel arrived in 2022 as part of Sorce's Winter Enchantments collection, a seasonal drop from Caitlin Hayes. The composition draws on a handful of very specific December sensations: coffee, freshly baked cinnamon bread, roasted chestnuts, blown out candles, lingering church incense, and softly falling snow. The notes aren't decorative. Each one comes from somewhere particular in the sensory landscape of late December. Together they form something cohesive, the kind of accord that flickers in when you catch a whiff of something familiar on a stranger walking past. The whole thing reads less like a typical holiday release and more like a composite sketch, built from the small atmospheric details that make the season feel like itself.
What's interesting is the tension baked into the structure. The edible notes, bread, cinnamon, roasted chestnut, sit alongside the sacred and the atmospheric: church frankincense, candle smoke, snow. That juxtaposition gives the composition its pull. This composition refuses to pick a lane between cozy and contemplative. The edible-leaning elements carry warmth and sweetness without surrendering to it, the incense adds depth and gravity without sliding into austerity, and the snow note threaded through everything provides a clean, cool counterweight.
The evolution
On skin, the opening registers as cold air and warmth in close proximity. Coffee comes through immediately, dark and sharp, the way brewed coffee smells before anything else enters the frame. Almost at the same moment the bread softens into focus, warm and yeasted, carrying cinnamon across its surface like a dusting. The roasted chestnut gathers underneath, dense and faintly sweet, pulling the opening toward something close to edible without ever crossing fully into gourmand territory. The candle smoke arrives early too, a faint wisp that sits at the edges before settling into the composition's architecture. Then the incense opens up. Church frankincense rises through the warmth, smoky and resinous, threading between the bread and chestnut rather than replacing them. The coffee doesn't disappear as this happens.
