The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Fires in the Night arrived in 2013 as part of Solstice Scents' Night Collection, a seasonal series built around atmospheric intensity. The fragrance opens with bright orange peel and a whisper of star anise, a combination that feels candied yet grounded. Warm spices follow, cloves and cinnamon weaving through a smoky wood base that feels like embers glowing in a dark room. A hint of vanilla softens the heat, while subtle citrus cuts through the smoke, giving the scent a lively edge. The name says what it means. No ambiguity needed. This is what it smells like when the fire is the only light left in the room.
The note composition is ambitious, with wood smoke, warm spices, citrus, vanilla, and multiple woody bases woven together. The most striking element in the opening is the orange and star anise pairing. Star anise lends a subtle aniseed nuance that most noses may not pinpoint, yet it adds an unexpected depth to the citrus brightness, making the top feel both bright and slightly spicy. Warm cloves and cinnamon follow, their heat tempered by a lavender absolute that keeps the spice from overwhelming the blend.
The evolution
The opening announces itself quickly, orange peel and star anise, bright and almost candied before the wood smoke slides in. Bergamot adds a brief citrus cut that lifts the initial burst. As the smoke settles, the heart emerges warm, smoky, and powdery at once, with cloves and cinnamon asserting themselves while lavender and patchouli keep the spice from sharpening. The star anise lingers quietly beneath the spice, a subtle echo of the opening that ties the stages together. Over time the fragrance shifts toward a rich drydown where vanilla cream mingles with warm sandalwood and a thread of smoke that remains present but never overpowering. The overall development feels seamless, moving from bright citrus to smoky warmth and finally to a soft, intimate finish.
Cultural impact
Fires in the Night opens with a bright citrus burst that quickly gives way to a smoky core. The interplay of orange peel and star anise creates a warm, slightly sweet opening that feels inviting rather than harsh. As the scent evolves, wood smoke dominates, supported by a blend of cloves and cinnamon that add depth without overwhelming. A vein of lavender and patchouli runs through the heart, tempering the spice and adding an herbal lift. The drydown settles into vanilla cream and sandalwood, with a lingering thread of smoke that remains close to the skin.
