The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The 2017 Escapade Estivale arrives as an extension of the Rochas summer story, crafted under in-house perfumer Jean-Michel Duriez who has overseen the house's fragrance direction since 2008. The name says it all: escapade, summery, a departure from routine. The original Eau de Rochas launched in 1970 as a citrus landmark for the house, and this edition takes that identity somewhere more specific, more seasonal, more playful. It's Rochas making a case for the easy afternoon.
The note structure is built on a deliberate tension: cool against warm. Mint and aquatic notes push the fragrance into territory that feels almost medicinal, then the orange blossom and amber pull it back toward softness. That push-pull is what makes Escapade Estivale more than just another fresh-citrus release. The packaging reinforces the concept with a pastel umbrella print on the outer box, while keeping the original bottle silhouette intact.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and tart. Orange and green apple arrive together, creating that crisp bite of something just bitten. Mint sharpens within the first two minutes, adding a cool edge that makes the citrus feel less sweet, more refreshing. The transition to the heart begins around the five-minute mark as the florals deepen and the whole composition warms slightly. Orange blossom takes over, but it's gentler here, less heady than in many Rochas compositions. The mint and aquatic notes keep everything airy. The drydown settles quietly into cedar and amber, with musk grounding the composition close to the skin. What started as a sharp, bright opening has softened into something warm and intimate. Moderate sillage throughout means it's a fragrance you notice yourself more than others notice you. On most skin types, the full arc runs three to four hours. The next morning on a wrist, a faint trace of cedar and clean skin.
Cultural impact
Summer fragrances have been a staple of perfumery since the early 20th century, when brands began marketing lighter scents as seasonal products. Rochas, founded in Paris in 1925, built its reputation on creating bold, distinctive perfumes that stood apart from the crowd. The escapade collection targets the carefree spirit of warm weather months when consumers seek refreshing, easy-wearing fragrances. Eau de Rochas Escapade Estivale continues this tradition, offering a modern interpretation of citrus-forward summer scents that dominate the warm weather fragrance market. The emphasis on orange blossom and green apple reflects contemporary preferences for fresh, fruity compositions that feel modern without sacrificing elegance.
