The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Supreme Sandal represents the Roberto Cavalli fragrance collection's exploration of sandalwood as a central element in opulent perfumery. Perfumer Philippine Courtière built the composition around Sri Lankan sandalwood, a material known for its creamy, persistent warmth that forms the fragrance's foundation. But this was not an exercise in meditative minimalism. Courtière layered black vanilla husk and saffron alongside the sandalwood, anchoring the woody heart in something richer and unmistakably Cavalli, adding depth and complexity that elevates the simple idea of a sandalwood scent into something more layered and intriguing.
The note combination is unusual precisely because it refuses to pick a lane. Black vanilla husk brings a charred, almost smoky sweetness that contradicts the sandalwood's creamy cleanliness. Saffron cuts through with its metallic-green spice. Honey acts as the unifier, pulling disparate elements into a warm, golden thread. The result is a fragrance that smells expensive but never polite, opulent without being excessive. The composition is presented in a bottle dressed in dark glass and gold, reflecting the house's bold visual identity.
The evolution
The opening announces itself with immediate warmth. Sandalwood arrives fresh, not aggressive, the quality of the Sri Lankan material evident in its clean, slightly milky character. Within minutes, the saffron emerges as a sharp counterpoint, a metallic-green spice that keeps the sweetness honest. The honey sits beneath, slow-building, turning the composition golden. Five hours in, something shifts. The sandalwood doesn't disappear, it deepens, settling into the dry wood of the base. The vanilla husk takes over, bringing a smoky, almost resinous quality that feels further from the opening than you'd expect. What began as warm and golden ends darker, resinous, close to the skin. On fabric, it lingers into the next day, faint traces of honey and warm wood in a way that rewards the patient wearer.
Cultural impact
Supreme Sandal occupies a specific corner of the Roberto Cavalli collection, presented in dark glass with gold accents. Wearers describe it as the scent of someone who walks into a room and does not need to announce themselves. The fragrance appeals to those who appreciate sandalwood presented with Cavalli's characteristic boldness, combining creamy woodiness with unexpected accents that keep the composition from feeling predictable or retiring.
