The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Louise Turner designed Oud al Qasr with an opulent brief in mind. The composition centers on a sweet gourmand oud that tones the bitter oud with vanilla and a graham cracker crust finish. It launched in 2014 as the Cavalli house's take on luxury resinous fragrance, built for presence without aggression. The interplay between rich oud and smooth vanilla creates a distinctive aromatic profile that feels simultaneously bold and approachable. Notes of warm spice and subtle sweetness dance together, offering a nuanced scent experience that captures the essence of contemporary luxury fragrance design.
What makes Oud al Qasr structurally distinctive is the way the composition announces itself through cedar before yielding to agarwood as the top settles. Rather than presenting the oud immediately, it builds gradually until the opening cedar has fully given way to a warm vanilla and labdanum foundation that feels almost edible. This sequencing gives the fragrance a duality: the confident, almost theatrical opening and the intimate, close-to-skin drydown are practically two different scents. The transition itself becomes part of the experience, with each phase revealing new facets of the blend.
The evolution
The opening hits like a door flung wide. Cedar and labdanum arrive together, sharp and resinous, with a bitterness that demands attention. The vanilla has not appeared yet. For the opening phase, this is architecture and structure, nothing soft about it. The cedar begins to settle as the agarwood starts its slow reveal. The bitterness does not disappear. It transforms, softened by vanilla that creeps in like warmth under a door left slightly ajar. The drydown is where Oud al Qasr earns its reputation. Vanilla and oud blend into something creamy and resinous, warm without heaviness, lingering close to the skin for a long time. There is something theatrical about the progression: bold entrance, gradual confession, quiet intimacy. It plays every act.
Cultural impact
Oud al Qasr has resonated with a dedicated following since its 2014 launch. Community feedback consistently cites its strong projection, vanilla-forward drydown, and the distinctive cedar opening as defining characteristics. The fragrance occupies a unique position in the oud landscape, offering a sophisticated take on the luxurious resinous note that appeals to those who appreciate complex, layered compositions.
