The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
When Rituals turned ten in 2013, the Dutch brand known for candles and body care decided its own perfume line was overdue. Perfumer Vincent Schaller was brought in to create a modern take on the traditional eau de cologne, something citrus-forward with real depth. The vetiver-bergamot pairing became the answer. Vetiver brought earthy depth and complexity; bergamot brought brightness and refinement. Together they created a fragrance that felt both grounded and effortless, a scent for the kind of mornings that deserve to be noticed, even if no one else does. The combination speaks to those who find meaning in the quiet moments, the unhurried rituals that shape a day.
Vetiver carries an earthy, mineral character that can be polarizing, sometimes described as smoky or even dirty. By leading with bergamot and letting vetiver arrive early, the composition honors both materials equally. The result is a fragrance that smells like its name suggests: vetiver and bergamot, in that order, honest about what it is. It's a clean woody scent without being boring, a citrus scent without being throwaway. The pairing creates something that feels neither too formal nor too casual, a fragrance that occupies a comfortable middle ground.
The evolution
The opening hits clean and bright, bergamot's citrus oil cutting through the morning air like sunlight through window glass. For the first phase, there's a crisp, almost sparkling clarity. Then vetiver arrives, earlier than expected, bringing its mineral-earth character with it. Damp soil. Smoked wood. The bergamot doesn't disappear but shifts in the background, softening as vetiver takes over the heart. The woody notes keep things grounded without adding weight. By the final hours, you're left with a skin-close warmth: vetiver's earthy drydown meeting soft wood, intimate and unhurried. It doesn't announce itself. It just stays.
Cultural impact
No. 17 was part of Rituals' first dedicated perfume collection, launched in 2013 to mark the brand's decade of existence. It presents itself as a modern cologne, fresh and citrus-forward, grounded by vetiver's earthy depth rather than the aquatic notes common in many fragrances. The composition uses bergamot for brightness and vetiver for complexity, creating something that feels both sophisticated and approachable. No. 17 represents the brand's broader philosophy of bringing meaning to everyday routines, with scent as a natural extension of that thinking.
