Why it exists.
The beginning
RING's 2021 release Genual continues the brand's exploration of garden-inspired fragrance, but here perfumer Julien Rasquinet shifts focus from verdant greens to the intoxicating bloom of a nighttime garden lit by saffron-tinted lanterns. Rasquinet chose jasmine as the anchor because of its dual nature: fresh and floral in the opening, deeper and more sensual as it ages. Lemon was added to cut through the richness, infusing the initial spray with sunlight clarity. The exotic saffron brings a spice that feels neither Oriental nor Western, straddling the line between garden and bazaar. The name Genual hints at this botanical duality, a hybrid of gentle and sensual.
RING selected jasmine for Genual because it offers both immediate gratification and long-term evolution on skin. Lemon complements it by providing the citrus punch that makes jasmine feel spontaneous rather than heavy. Saffron was chosen as the bridge between floral and exotic, its leather-spice character giving the opening complexity that rewards attention. The almond-amber pairing in the heart serves a dual purpose: almond adds warmth without sweetness, and amber amplifies that warmth into something substantial. Cedarwood at the end grounds the entire structure, ensuring that the sweetness of the heart does not overwhelm.
