The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Panah London launched in 2016 as a UK-based niche house aiming to blend British refinement with Swiss-grade formulation precision. Velvet Oudh arrived as part of the inaugural collection alongside Rose Musk, Italian Citrus and 24K Citrus, each scent engineered to showcase specific material combinations. The house selected cashmere wood and rose for the opening of this scent because they wanted an introduction that felt tactile and inviting rather than sharp or overpowering. Patchouli was chosen as the heart material to provide grounding without the typical earthy heaviness associated with it.
Panah London built this composition around the idea that cashmere wood could provide a modern alternative to traditional oud openings. Rose was included specifically to bridge the gap between the wood and the deeper heart phase. Patchouli serves as the logical transition material, with its aromatic profile complementing both the floral opening and the resinous drydown. Ambergris and oud were selected for the base to ensure the final phase feels distinctive rather than generic, with ambergris adding marine-animalic nuance that prevents the oud from becoming one-dimensional.
The evolution
The opening of Velvet Oudh prioritizes cashmere wood as the primary note, creating immediate warmth that feels cozy and refined. Rose enters shortly after, lending quiet floral character that softens the woody foundation without becoming overtly feminine. As time passes, patchouli emerges as the heart note, replacing the rose's presence with earthy depth that shifts the composition toward masculinity. The drydown introduces ambergris for its salty, animalic warmth before oud settles in as the lasting material, adding smoky resinous complexity that anchors the entire experience from start to finish.
Cultural impact
Since its 2016 debut, Velvet Oudh has been noted for its elegant rose‑oud marriage, often mentioned alongside Tom Ford Oud Wood and MFK’s Baccarat Rouge 540. Reviewers praise its plush opening and balanced drydown, while some note its subtle sillage makes it a discreet choice for evening wear. Its blend of cashmere wood and ambergris gives it a distinctive, refined edge that sets it apart in the modern oud niche.
