The beginning
Cassius Oud by Palquis arrived in 2018 as part of the brand's Cassius line, produced under the umbrella of Groupe Arthes, a manufacturer known for accessible takes on classic perfumery styles. Palquis's own backstory remains thinly documented, but the Cassius and leaning forms clearly leans into a shared aesthetic: dense, resinous, and hard on the Eastern side of oriental composition. Cassius Oud swaps the usual pure oud intensity for a broader smoky-amber blend, wearing its incense and leather openly. It draws on a long heritage of Middle Eastern perfumery traditions without positioning itself as a niche or artisanal project. The fragrance sits firmly in an accessible wardrobe space built around warmth, presence, and the kind of comfort that doesn't require justification.
What makes Cassius Oud worth attention is its frankincense-led structure rather than oud. Most fragrances that advertise "oud" lead with that material, loudly and often aggressively. Cassius Oud opens with frankincense instead, letting the resin set the smoky tone before nagarmotha and nutmeg arrive in the heart. Nagarmotha, also called cypriol oil, is a less common note in Western-market releases, giving the composition an earthy, rooty depth that grounds the composition in something distinctly Eastern.
The evolution
Cassius Oud opens with a bright lift of frankincense resin, airy and incensed in the first minutes. Within half an hour, cypriol oil and nutmeg warm into the heart, adding an earthy, rooty depth that softens the smoke. By the second hour, leather, ambergris, and labdanum settle into a dense amber base that lingers close to the skin for another four hours or more, leaving a resin trail that draws the wearer back in for repeated sniffs. The transition from opening to drydown feels measured rather than abrupt, each stage giving way to the next with a slow, deliberate handoff.
Cultural impact
Cassius Oud occupies an interesting middle ground in the oriental fragrance market. Wearers frequently compare it to Gucci Intense Oud, usually favorably, noting its softer, sweeter character. It reads as a fragrance for cooler weather and evening occasions, the kind of scent that fits a heavy coat and a dimly lit room. That said, the warmth and resinous weight also make it versatile enough to wear on transitional autumn days when the air carries a chill but the sun still holds warmth.
