The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The fruit itself was the starting point. The goal was to create a mango note that felt immediate and genuine, not constructed from synthetic approximations. Alexis Grugeon approached the composition with a focus on capturing the actual character of the fruit, that bright, juicy quality that comes from real mango rather than a lab-created version of it. The brief called for a fragrance that would lead with tropical fruit and build a supporting base that could complement it without overwhelming the main accord. What emerged is something designed to make an impact quickly, keeping the mango at the forefront while allowing the supporting notes to provide depth and staying power.
The composition works because the sweet and the fresh aren't fighting. Mango could easily go cloying with vanilla underneath, but the pineapple sorbet and blackcurrant pull it back toward something cooler. Freesia adds a clean floral lift that stops the gourmand notes from overwhelming, it's the reason this doesn't smell like dessert at a beach party. The heart is doing real work here: holding the tropics in place while the base (musk, sandalwood, vanilla) grounds everything into something that reads as 'summer evening' rather than 'candy shop'.
The evolution
The opening belongs to the mango. Mandarin and passion fruit arrive together, creating a bright citrus-tropical burst that hits immediately with no ambiguity. The experience is straightforward and immediate. Around the ten-minute mark the ice cream accord emerges, not heavy, just cool, like stepping into shade after being in direct sun. The pineapple sorbet adds a slightly sharp quality while the blackcurrant introduces a tart edge that prevents the composition from becoming too sweet. This middle phase is where the fragrance reveals its structure. By hour two, the vanilla becomes more prominent as the tropical fruits recede to a warm background hum. The sandalwood prevents the composition from becoming purely sweet, keeping the overall balance grounded.
Cultural impact
Part of the Oh! Sweet collection, Gelato Vibes occupies a distinct space in the fruity fragrance category. It appeals to those who want mango as the dominant note, delivered clearly without ambiguity or heavy artistic interpretation. The fragrance presents the fruit doing what it does best, with a straightforward tropical character that doesn't require decoding. This direct approach makes it approachable for those who might be new to fragrance or who prefer their scents to communicate clearly rather than requiring exploration. The composition stands out for its willingness to let mango lead without apology.
