The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Once Perfume's philosophy centers on the unrepeatable moment, each fragrance a deliberate choice, not a product cycle. Courield, launched in 2021, embodies that idea: a scent built around the tension between brief brightness and lasting warmth. Perfumer Soïzic Beaucourt structured the composition to open sharp and sparkling, then shift into something quieter and more personal as the hours pass. The name itself suggests something fleeting, a moment worth capturing, exactly what this fragrance attempts to do.
The bridge between fresh-green and warm-woody is where Courield earns attention. Benzoin, a resin from the styrax tree, sits at the heart, providing a sweet, vanillic warmth that softens the transition from top to base. Without it, the fragrance might read as purely aromatic. With it, the heart becomes something warmer, more intimate. Cypress and vetiver form the base, but their role isn't dominance, it's grounding. The vetiver, with its earthy, slightly smoky character, keeps the drydown from becoming sweet. The cypress adds an aromatic stillness that reads as natural rather than constructed. This is the difference between a fragrance that smells nice and one that feels composed.
The evolution
The opening arrives bright and direct, citrus foremost, coriander leaf adding a quick herbal lift. Green notes keep it grounded in something real rather than synthetic. Within the first hour, the character shifts. The heart opens: benzoin's warmth, the spices settling in. This is where Courield becomes itself, leaving behind the archetype it initially echoes and becoming something more personal. The drydown strips back to essentials. Cypress and vetiver take over, the aromatic base creating a quiet, close presence. On skin, it lasts 6-8 hours with moderate sillage, intimate from start to finish. The woods don't project so much as linger, like something worn-in and familiar.
Cultural impact
Courield occupies a specific space in niche perfumery, aromatic-woody with fresh-green manners. It appeals to the wearer who values presence over projection, lasting over loud. Within Once Perfume's small, focused collection, it represents a quieter approach: not trying to be everything, just doing what it does well.
