The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Oudyssee takes its name from the odyssey, a journey with no guaranteed destination. For Montale, the voyage was always eastward, into the rich perfume traditions of Arabia. Their founder spent years immersed in that world before bringing it back to Paris. The name carries that weight: crossing from Western freshness into Eastern depth. But Oudyssee doesn't arrive there by accident. It maps the route deliberately, pairing marine and citrus with oud in a way that feels exploratory rather than aggressive. The 2023 release marks a rare moment when Montale builds a bridge rather than a fortress.
The marine-oud pairing is what makes this unusual. Montale's identity is intensity, bold oud, unapologetic presence. Oudyssee keeps that signature but introduces salt water and citrus as the opening act. The effect is Mediterranean rather than Middle Eastern. Bergamot from Calabria, sea salt accord, lemon bright enough to read as coastal. The oud arrives later, in the drydown, softened by mate's herbal bitterness. It's still Montale at the core. But the house took the scenic route to get there.
The evolution
The opening doesn't prepare you. Sea salt and lemon arrive bright, almost sharp, bergamot's citrus tempered by lavender's green edge. The marine reads as coastal, not aquatic. Like standing on a cliff rather than poolside. The transition starts around the 20-minute mark when ginger cuts through, clean heat that pivots the composition from fresh to warm. Amber follows, sweetness that deepens rather than sweetens. By the second hour, the citrus fades and oud takes its position. This is where Oudyssee reveals itself as Montale, mate's bitter herbs underneath, musk close to the skin. The sillage settles into moderate. Not loud, but present. The drydown holds for hours: oud, mate, a whisper of salt. Clean in the morning, rich by evening. The oud doesn't dominate, it settles in, patient and warm.
Cultural impact
A fresh direction for a house built on intensity. Oudyssee appeals to those who want Montale's signature depth without the full weight of their typical oud offerings. Marine and citrus make it approachable where others demand commitment. It marks a strategic pivot toward accessible luxury, opening the brand to new audiences.
