The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Magnolia was born in MetaScent's Melbourne studio in 2020, when perfumer Huỳnh Hải Yến set out to capture the duality of a crisp orchard and a blooming garden. The brief called for a scent that felt like the first bite of a green apple followed by the soft, creamy petals of magnolia, jasmine and gardenia. Yến worked with the studio's focus on personal narrative, asking collectors what the word magnolia made them feel before locking in the final structure. The brand's commitment to hands-on craftsmanship meant every iteration was tested on skin before approval, ensuring the opening apple note would cut through without clashing with the florals beneath it. The result reflects both the perfumer's Vietnamese botanical heritage and the Australian setting where it was created.
The note structure reflects a deliberate philosophy: start with something refreshing and immediately distinguishable, then bloom into florals that feel hand-picked rather than constructed. Green apple serves as the freshener, gardenia as the rich floral anchor, jasmine as the complexity worker and magnolia as the bridge between them. Ambergris was chosen for its ability to extend wear while adding a subtly marine quality that echoes the coastal studios where MetaScent creates. The woods provide structure without overwhelming, keeping the floral heart always visible. Each note was selected to serve a specific function in the overall arc rather than simply adding weight or complexity.
The evolution
The fragrance moves through three distinct chapters. Green apple opens things with a tart, glistening brightness that feels like morning in an orchard, the kind of crispness that wakes you up before the sun has fully risen. Gardenia arrives next, its waxy petals offering a creamy richness that sits close to the skin, while jasmine weaves in and out with a faint animalic undertone. Magnolia adds its signature buttery softness, smoothing the transition between the brighter fruit and the denser floral heart. As the hours pass, ambergris and woods take over, with ambergris providing a salty, slightly balsamic depth that keeps the final wearing warm without going heavy. Woods keep things clean and lifted, preventing the base from ever fully retreating into darkness.
Cultural impact
Since its 2020 launch, Magnolia has resonated with a generation that values fresh, nature‑inspired fragrances. Its green apple opening evokes the crispness of early mornings, while the white‑floral heart recalls traditional garden gatherings, bridging modern minimalism with classic elegance. The scent quickly became a staple in urban brunch culture, appearing in lifestyle blogs and social media posts that celebrate sustainable, artisanal perfume making. By aligning with the growing demand for transparent ingredient sourcing, Magnolia helped reinforce MetaScent’s reputation for ethical craftsmanship, influencing other niche houses to adopt similar green‑focused narratives.
