Heritage
A house, in its own words
MetaScent emerged in 2017 when two Melbourne‑based entrepreneurs, one of whom is perfumer Yen, decided to revive the hands‑on tradition of niche perfumery that had largely migrated to large‑scale factories. Their first studio opened on Chapel Street, a precinct known for independent fashion and design, and quickly became a gathering point for artists, designers and scent enthusiasts. Early on the founders hosted weekly workshops where participants could blend essential oils under professional guidance, a practice that cemented the brand’s reputation for education as well as creation. In 2019 MetaScent released its first stand‑alone fragrance, Delonix, a woody‑floral tribute to the Australian summer, which was featured in local lifestyle magazines and earned a modest but enthusiastic following. The following years saw a steady cadence of releases: Light (2020), Padme (2021), Starry Night (2022) and a series of 2023 launches including Adrenaline and Sakihana, each reflecting a distinct thematic inspiration ranging from kinetic energy to Japanese garden motifs. 2024 marked a prolific period with Wildflower & Acacia and Waratah Sunset, both celebrating native Australian flora. Throughout this growth the studio retained its core model of in‑store creation, expanding to a second location in Sydney in 2022 and launching an online custom‑design portal in 2023. By 2025 MetaScent introduced an Advanced Class program, a multi‑day intensive led by Yen that teaches participants the chemistry of perfume, ingredient sourcing and the art of balance. The brand’s evolution illustrates a commitment to community‑centered perfumery, where each new scent is both a product and a collaborative experience. MetaScent’s creative vision rests on the belief that fragrance is a personal archive, a way to encode memory in scent. The studio encourages clients to articulate a story—whether it is a childhood garden, a travel moment or an abstract feeling—and then translates that narrative into a balanced olfactory composition. This narrative‑first approach diverges from trend‑driven releases; instead, the house measures success by how accurately a perfume mirrors the brief it was given. Sustainability informs the brand’s values: ingredients are sourced from suppliers who practice ethical harvesting, and the studio prefers natural absolutes and responsibly derived synthetics over mass‑produced aromachemicals. Transparency is built into the process; clients receive a written brief that outlines each ingredient’s origin, concentration and intended emotional effect. Education underpins the philosophy, evident in the regular workshops and the Advanced Class, which aim to demystify perfumery for a broader audience. By treating scent as a collaborative language rather than a commodity, MetaScent seeks to foster a community where each bottle tells a unique story.
