Sel_Vanille was released in 2020 and composed by David Maruitte. Maruitte chose sage as the opening, an unusual choice for a fragrance bearing the vanilla name, signaling immediately that this is not a sweet or gourmand proposition at its core. The brand's philosophy of accessibility meant that every note had to serve the whole rather than stand alone as a statement.
The decision to lead with sage rather than vanilla reflects a philosophy that prioritizes contrast. Sel_Vanille earns its name not through upfront sweetness but through a drydown that delivers genuine vanilla warmth tempered by cedarwood structure. This pairing is deliberate: vanilla on its own risks becoming linear and one-dimensional, but cedarwood adds a dry, woody counterweight that extends the drydown and creates depth.
