The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Il Était une Nuit translates, roughly, to "It Was a Night", the title alone suggests something happened after dark, something worth bottling. This is the nectar format of an existing M. Micallef fragrance called Watch, meaning the house took a beloved composition and concentrated it further. The result is a fragrance that projects harder and lasts longer than its predecessor, above average on both counts. Perfumer Jean-Claude Astier built the structure around a fruity-floral heart: peach and plum at the opening, tuberose and jasmine taking center stage, with vanilla providing a warm, sweet foundation that ties everything together. The name evokes memory, a specific evening, the kind that lingers in the air after you've left the room.
The nectar concentration is the key move here. Taking an existing fragrance and amplifying it isn't just about strength, it's about presence. With Il Était une Nuit, the tuberose doesn't merely arrive. It announces itself. The peach and plum sit close to the skin in the opening, almost intimate, while the white florals expand outward into the space around you. The double dose of bourbon vanilla, in both heart and base, creates a warm, sweet foundation that extends the wear well beyond the average. What makes this composition interesting is the balance between the cool fruit notes and the warm vanilla base. They're not fighting. They're taking turns.
The evolution
The opening is all soft fruit, peach and plum in a register that's almost jammy. Then the tuberose arrives, creamy and indolic with a subtle animalic edge that blooms into the space around you and dominates the next few hours. The jasmine appears as a soft counterpoint, keeping the tuberose from becoming too much. As the florals settle, warm vanilla and amber begin their slow rise from the base, wrapping everything in something cozy and inviting. The drydown is where this fragrance lives: a quiet, intimate warmth that stays close to the skin, projecting softly but persistently. On fabric, it becomes a subtle trace, a ghost of flowers and vanilla that remains present long after application.
Cultural impact
The nectar format takes an existing M. Micallef composition and amplifies it for those who want more intensity from a beloved fragrance. Il Était une Nuit is the concentrated answer to Watch, offering the house's fruity-floral character in a more powerful expression. It appeals to collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate the extra depth and longevity that concentration provides.
