The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Frank Voelkl composed 18 Vanilla Nera in 2024 as the second numbered release from Ledda, working with the house's direct sourcing from Nigeria and Indonesia. Rather than building a predictable vanilla fragrance, Voelkl used the vanilla tahitensis CO2 as a foundation rather than the star. The warm, sweet-spicy blend of Nigerian ginger and pink pepper CO2 opens the composition, creating an unexpected entry point before the heart reveals frankincense and green cardamom. White flowers provide contrast, while Indonesian patchouli and whipped musks give the drydown its creaminess without sweetness. The result is a vanilla-forward fragrance with an edge, resinous, spicy, and bold enough to make a statement.
What makes 18 Vanilla Nera interesting is the relationship between its naming and its actual character. The vanilla is present but not dominant. Instead, the frankincense and green cardamom create a warm, aromatic heart that shifts the composition away from gourmand territory and into something more resinous and complex. The Nigerian ginger and pink pepper CO2 extracts bring a precision to the top notes that feels modern rather than classical. Indonesian patchouli anchors the base with an earthy, woody quality that gives the vanilla something to lean against. The whipped musks in the drydown provide creaminess without sweetness, a deliberate choice that keeps the fragrance from becoming dessert.
The evolution
The opening burst of Nigerian ginger CO2, pink pepper, and bergamot hits immediately. The bergamot sparkles above the composition, its citrus brightness cutting through the spice like a flash of light. This phase lasts roughly 15 to 30 minutes before the heart begins to emerge. Then the heart arrives: frankincense and green cardamom weave through white flowers, warm and slightly smoky. The cardamom adds an aromatic complexity that shifts the fragrance from bright spice into something more resinous and contemplative. The white flowers provide a soft counterpoint, preventing the composition from becoming too heavy. The drydown is where the vanilla tahitensis CO2 finally takes its place, supported by Indonesian patchouli and musk. The patchouli gives the vanilla something to lean against, earthy, woody, and just slightly bitter. The musk adds creaminess without sweetness. This phase lasts 4 to 6 hours on most skin types, with the vanilla becoming more pronounced as the hours pass.
Cultural impact
18 Vanilla Nera arrived in 2024 as Ledda's second numbered release, positioning itself in the warm vanilla space with a resinous, spicy edge. Wearers describe it as a sophisticated alternative to mass-market sweet fragrances, complex, balsamic, and with genuine depth. The camphoraceous opening polarizes some, but those who stay with it find a drydown that rewards patience. The fragrance attracts compliments and has found a following among those seeking something more interesting than typical vanilla offerings.
