The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Naturel arrived in 2010 from Catherine Poensin-Stefani, a perfumer whose work on this composition favors clarity over ornamentation. Kaloo had already established itself in scent design for children before the launch, building on years of work in the category. Naturel joined a catalog of scented waters created with delicate young skin in mind, a perfume formulated to feel safe, soft, and unforced from the first spray. The name itself means "natural," and the brief was simple: create something that felt instinctive rather than constructed, a scent that settled into the air around the wearer. Poensin-Stefani worked with a small palette, just enough to suggest warmth and softness without weighing the composition down.
What makes Naturel interesting is what it leaves out. The composition refuses ornamentation: no layered accords, no dramatic transitions, no display pieces. Rose and grapefruit open with clarity, their freshness intact and unforced. Then peach anchors the middle in a sweetness that reads as natural rather than synthetic, the kind of fruit note that feels picked rather than poured. Musk closes the composition without adding weight, settling into the base like a quiet signature rather than a final announcement. The accords confirm the approach: fruity, powdery, musky, sweet, floral.
The evolution
Naturel opens with grapefruit's bright cut, almost like the first sip of something cool on a warm afternoon. Rose arrives within that opening, giving the citrus a rounded edge, turning sharpness into something more tender. The top notes hold their position for a while, neither rushing nor stalling, and then peach comes forward at the center of the composition like a held breath. The peach is sweet but not sticky, more like ripe fruit held in a closed hand than anything confectionery. The musk emerges gradually as the hours pass, pulling the peach closer to skin temperature, softening the sweetness until what remains feels less like a perfume and more like a presence. Eventually the drydown arrives, warm, slightly powdery, close to the body, the kind of trace you notice when you lean in rather than the kind that reaches across a room.
Cultural impact
Naturel arrived in 2010 at a moment when fragrance for children was quietly being reconsidered. The early 2010s brought a softening of the category, with compositions moving toward real floral and citrus material rather than the heavier, sweeter profiles that had dominated earlier decades. Naturel positioned itself within that shift, offering a rose-grapefruit-peach-musk structure that prioritized clarity and tenderness over display. Its simplicity felt intentional, a fragrance that trusted its wearer to appreciate restraint rather than spectacle.
