The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Fabrice Pellegrin created Velvet Rose & Oud for Jo Malone London in 2012. The brief: capture something darker than the brand's usual register. Damask rose is not a quiet note here, it's the darkest bloom in the garden, the one that catches evening light and won't let go. Oud brings smoke and weight. The tension between them is the point. Clove adds an unexpected warmth. Praline keeps the sweetness honest. The composition unfolds in layers, each note pressing against the others, creating a fragrance that feels both opulent and grounded. The interplay of floral richness and smoky depth gives it a character that is unapologetically bold yet remains cohesive.
The combination of damask rose and oud is deliberate, rose needs something to push against, and oud provides the weight that keeps it from floating into abstraction. Clove amplifies the spice without becoming medicinal. Praline is the surprise: a sweet, nutty note that rounds the edges and makes the whole composition feel plush rather than sharp. What makes this distinctive is how the sweetness stays integrated, never tipping into gourmand territory, always held in check by the smoky depth beneath.
The evolution
The opening is damask rose, dark and velvety. Not a garden rose, something with more weight, almost jamminess. The oud arrives within seconds, smoky and dense, wrapping around the rose before it can fully open. Clove adds a sharp warmth that gives the whole thing an almost edible quality. Praline appears almost immediately, a sweetness that tempers the spice. The heart deepens as the rose and oud settle together. The rose becomes even darker, the oud smokier, clove's warmth spreading through the composition. Praline adds a richness that makes the whole thing feel decadent and warm, almost edible without quite crossing into gourmand. Almost sweet but not quite. The tension holds. The drydown is quieter. The darkest damask rose lingers close to skin, wrapped in smoky oud. Clove reduced to a whisper. Praline settling into something that smells like velvet left behind on warm skin.
Cultural impact
Velvet Rose & Oud Cologne Intense offers something richer and more complex within the Jo Malone range. The combination of velvety rose, smoky oud, and warm spice creates a fragrance well-suited to cooler months and evening occasions. The sillage remains moderate, which suits the brand's understated approach. Rather than filling a room, this fragrance draws people in, revealing itself to those who come close.
