The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nuud launched in 2021 from a JAFRA catalog that, for decades, had built its identity around accessible fragrance for a broad audience. The release was a departure in structure if not in spirit: a composition stripped to its essential notes, built to be worn by anyone regardless of the usual gendered marketing cues that dominate the category. Its name does the work of an entire press release. Nude, raw, unadorned. No costume, no costume jewelry. Just skin, scent, and the air between. The fragrance positions itself as something elemental, a scent that doesn't decorate the wearer so much as reveal them, holding back on ornament in favor of something that reads as honest from the first spray.
Three notes. Bergamot, vanilla bean, woody notes. That's the entire pyramid, and that's the point. Where most contemporary compositions stack four or five heart notes and a base built from three or four materials, Nuud's structure is almost architectural in its restraint. Bergamot handles the brightness, a citrus that reads as sparkling and lifted, with a clean effervescence that sharpens the first moments of wear. Vanilla bean takes the middle, deeper and more grounded than the usual frosting or sweetness, carrying a creamy density that gives the composition its body.
The evolution
On skin, the first moments are almost entirely bergamot. Bright, cold, a little sharp, the kind of citrus that cuts through the air with intention. There's a soapiness to it that reads as recently washed, a clean first impression that most wearers notice immediately. The bergamot holds attention for longer than you'd expect from a top note, carrying much of the opening act on its own before the vanilla begins to register. The vanilla arrives not with sweetness but with warmth, a shift in temperature that settles into the composition without announcing itself. The woods follow as the fragrance softens, and the scent settles into its actual identity: warm skin, a trace of soap, something faintly sweet underneath that you can't quite name. The drydown past the initial few hours is almost entirely woody, a soft, close warmth that sits on the skin rather than projecting from it.
Cultural impact
Nuud launched in 2021 as a release that pushed against the traditional boundaries of gendered marketing in accessible fragrance. The source material describes it as 'for women and men,' and that simple phrasing places it in a category of releases that treat scent as something beyond the usual binary framing. The name itself does the heavy lifting on the conceptual side. Stripped bare, reduced to its most elemental form, it reflects an intent that the composition reinforces through its three-note structure.
