The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Teatro Real opera house sits at the heart of Madrid, its 19th-century stage hosting some of the world's most dramatic performances. Loewe's Un Paseo por Madrid collection translates the city's landmarks into unisex fragrance, and Ópera is the olfactory equivalent of the house lights dimming. In-house perfumer Nuria Cruelles captured the drama: the anticipation before the first aria, the hush of the audience, the warmth of velvet and the sense of something beautiful unfolding. Vanilla anchors the composition while jasmine and freesia bring the floral weight of an opening act. Rose threads through as the quiet protagonist, not the loudest note, but the one that stays.
The composition draws from a broader palette of ingredients arranged across a complete fragrance pyramid. Turkish rose and bright fruits open the top, creating an immediate sense of sweetness with a tart edge that keeps things lively rather than cloying. Ylang-ylang threads through the heart alongside nutmeg's subtle spice, while leather and amber provide warmth and depth that feels refined rather than heavy. The base builds with patchouli's earthy sophistication, layered over musk and vanilla for creamy warmth, grounded by Virginia cedar and Haitian vetiver that add woody, smoky undertones.
The evolution
The opening announces Turkish rose first, bright and slightly spiced, the kind of floral that arrives before you've fully settled into your seat. Fruits follow within minutes, softening the edges into something sweeter and more approachable. The leather and amber begin to emerge as the composition settles, blending with nutmeg's subtle warmth into a skin-close haze. By the second hour, the florals have mostly retreated, leaving behind a warm base of patchouli, musk, and vanilla that lingers close. The sillage stays moderate throughout, intimate from start to finish, never reaching for attention. On fabric, the drydown can last into the next morning: warm, quiet, and distinctly yours.
Cultural impact
Launched in 2019, Xerjoff Opera has had time to establish itself within the fragrance community. Part of the brand's V collection, later incorporated into the Vibe line, it positions itself as a statement fragrance rather than a commercial scent. The name alone places it squarely in theatrical territory, appealing to those who value boldness and drama in their perfume choices.
