The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Un Air d'Arabie line takes traditional Arabic aromatics and runs them through a French structure. Four fragrances made up the collection, Rose of Taif, Musk, Oriental, and this one. Oud. The composition centers on the freshness of western roses against the woody presence of Arabian agarwood. Not a fusion. A dialogue. Two materials that have no business smelling coherent together, brought together by careful formulation that emphasizes contrast. The interplay between these two elements creates something memorable, where each note maintains its integrity while forming a cohesive whole.
What makes this work is the patience. The rose opens and stays. It's not subtle exactly, but it's measured. The oud doesn't crash the party, it arrives late and sits down like it was always there. The pyramid reflects this approach: rose as top note and heart note means the florals carry the full journey. The oud appears in the base, and once it does, it lingers. The composition favors composure over spectacle, with each material given room to express itself fully before the next enters.
The evolution
The opening is pure rose, not a single note but a character. There's something almost botanical about it, like pressing your nose to petals still damp from morning. This phase holds for the first part of the wear, its brightness remaining present as the fragrance develops. Then something shifts. The rose doesn't disappear, it deepens, takes on a faintly honeyed warmth that suggests it's settling into its own skin rather than fading. The oud arrives quietly. No smoke, no barnyard. Just wood. Resinous, warm, present. As time passes, the rose and oud begin to read as one continuous warmth, the separation between them becoming less distinct. The longevity is notable. The composition remains coherent for hours, holding together as a unified scent experience rather than distinct phases.
Cultural impact
The Un Air d'Arabie line arrived in 2010 as part of the collection. It represents an approach to rose and oud that prioritizes longevity and quiet conversation between gardens. The blend offers a sustained sensory experience that develops gradually rather than announcing itself all at once.
