The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
DKNY launched the Delicious Candy Apples line in 2011, introducing Sweet Strawberry as a fragrance that captures the essence of fresh strawberry fruit wrapped in gourmand aromas. The scent opens with bright, juicy strawberry character that feels immediate and authentic. There's a natural sweetness to the composition that reads as actual fruit rather than synthetic approximation. The gourmand elements add depth and richness without overwhelming the strawberry heart, creating a fragrance that feels both playful and sophisticated. It's the kind of scent that invites you in rather than announcing itself, making strawberry the star while surrounding it with complementary warmth.
The strawberry mousse note is the anchor here. This one reads as actual fruit, bright, slightly tart, with the depth that comes from real strawberry. The orange blossom in the top keeps it from cloying, while the cotton candy in the heart adds that playful, airy sweetness. The floral middle (jasmine and peony) tempers the confectionery notes just enough to keep this from smelling like a candy shop. Sandalwood and musk in the base are the quiet workhorses, holding everything together and keeping the scent close to the skin rather than projecting it outward.
The evolution
The opening is bergamot and orange blossom, a citrusy sparkle that clears the air before the strawberry arrives. It doesn't tease. Strawberry mousse hits within the first minutes, juicy and immediate. The cotton candy note in the heart is lighter than expected, more gossamer than syrup. Jasmine and peony add a soft floral layer that prevents the sweetness from becoming overwhelming. The drydown is where it gets interesting: sandalwood and musk settle in, turning the brightness into something warm and skin-close. As the top notes fade, the sweetness moderates after the first hour into something more intimate, wrapping around the wearer rather than announcing itself to the room. The progression feels natural, each stage bleeding into the next without sharp transitions, until the final skin-close warmth emerges as the dominant impression.
Cultural impact
Released in 2011, Sweet Strawberry appealed to those who wanted fruit without the heaviness. The strawberry-forward approach offered a fresh alternative in a landscape where sweeter, more confectionery-driven fragrances dominated. It carved out space for a fruity scent that felt sophisticated rather than childish, proving that strawberry could be the foundation for something genuinely elegant.
