The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Céline Barel designed Summer Sailing around a single moment: the excitement of sailing at unknown places. She wanted to bottle the feeling of salty breeze, saltwater spray on the face, and the warmth of a sun that kisses skin gently at sunset. The idea was simple, you don't have to leave home to feel the ocean.
What makes this work is the pairing of aldehydes with cucumber water. Aldehydes bring a champagne-like lift, an effervescence that most aquatics skip in favor of flat marine accords. Cucumber water grounds it in something cool and almost edible. The Sicilian bergamot adds Mediterranean warmth underneath. It's not trying to be a storm at sea. It's the moment before, calm water, warm light, open possibility.
The evolution
The opening arrives bright and aldehydic, almost champagne-like. Cucumber water reads clean and watery, while Sicilian bergamot adds a citrus lift that catches light. Within minutes the heart takes over. Calone steps in, bringing the marine depth, not a stormy sea, but the smell of rain-washed air. Violet leaf and rain accord create an almost atmospheric quality, like standing on a dock after a passing shower. The drydown settles close. Blond woods and musk blend with sea moss for a skin-close finish that lingers 4-6 hours. The sillage stays moderate throughout, present to those nearby, never announcing itself.
Cultural impact
Summer Sailing fits Clean’s philosophy of intimate, close-to-skin wear. It’s not about projecting presence, it’s about enhancing the wearer’s own aura. The transparent aquatic category was crowded by 2014, but Clean’s aldehydic lift and cucumber water gave this one a distinctive edge within the brand’s minimalist American aesthetic.
