The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Definition arrived in 2017, composed by Guillaume Flavigny with an emphasis on personal expression. The fragrance carries notes of red apple, mandarin, bergamot, vanilla orchid, diamond orchid, heliotrope, musk, and hinoki wood. It presents as a creamy floral fragrance with citrus brightness in the opening, softening through the heart with orchid warmth, and settling into a powdery, intimate drydown. The composition reflects a balance between vibrant and soft character, allowing the wearer to experience Definition as a fragrance that speaks to individuality rather than conforming to passive expectations.
The note structure is deliberate in its contrast. Top notes of red apple, Italian mandarin, and Sicilian bergamot arrive with clarity and purpose, bright, fruity, immediate. They don't linger. That's intentional. The heart, vanilla orchid and diamond orchid, is where the fragrance earns its name. These aren't the most common materials in mainstream perfumery. Vanilla orchid especially carries a different quality than straight vanilla absolute: greener, airier, less dessert-like. Diamond orchid is a proprietary note often associated with a luminous, slightly waxy floralcy. Together they build a heart that is sweet without being sugary, floral without being girlish.
The evolution
The opening hits fast. Red apple and mandarin are immediately perceptible, crisp, clean, a little tart. Bergamot smooths the edges. As the citrus begins to recede, the orchid heart takes over. Vanilla orchid and diamond orchid bloom in tandem, creating a creamy floral warmth that shifts the fragrance from bright to soft. This middle phase brings out the richer, more layered character of the blend. The drydown arrives quietly. Heliotrope comes forward with its characteristic almond-floral softness, and musk keeps the composition close to the skin. Hinoki wood prevents it from becoming entirely abstract, adding a clean, slightly resinous depth that anchors the powdery elements. Definition announces itself in the opening, then settles into something quieter and more personal, lingering well into the evening.
Cultural impact
Definition has found its audience through accessibility and honesty. Rated well above average for value, it offers an honest scent profile that works across a range of preferences. The fragrance occupies a space that feels both approachable and distinctive, avoiding the pitfalls of generic department store offerings while remaining accessible to everyday wearers. For many, it serves as a reliable choice when seeking something pleasant and uncomplicated, a scent that delivers without demanding attention.
