Betty Barclay traces its origins to a small fashion shop established in Mannheim in 1955. However, the brand name itself predates this founding. After World War II, the German company Berk acquired the Europe-wide license to the previously American label Betty Barclay and began manufacturing women's fashions from Heidelberg. This licensing arrangement transformed the name into a German fashion house with international roots. Over the following decades, the company grew from those regional beginnings in Mannheim into an international group of companies. The fashion house maintained its focus on women's clothing before extending into lifestyle products including cosmetics and, eventually, fragrances. In 1994, Betty Barclay released its first perfume, a sophisticated floriental named after the original designer herself. This inaugural fragrance established the brand's approach to scent creation, blending floral and oriental elements into a refined composition. The launch marked Betty Barclay's entry into the fragrance market, setting a precedent for subsequent releases that would explore themes of femininity, romance, and playful elegance. Over the next three decades, the brand steadily expanded its fragrance portfolio, releasing new scents on a regular basis and building a collection that reached 52 perfumes by 2026. Today, Betty Barclay remains part of the broader Betty Barclay Group, a company that evolved from that original Mannheim boutique into a significant presence in European fashion and beauty.
