Why it exists.
The beginning
TestoX arrived in 2023 from perfumer Andreas Wilhelm as a reissue of a more concentrated version of his earlier Sentifique composition, Testostérone. The original came from a different label, a different era of his work. Aura brought it back in a denser form, and the result is a spiced-leather composition that takes its core ingredients seriously. Patchouli runs from top to base, layered with birch tar's charred sweetness and oud's resinous backbone, spices burning through every phase. There's no citrus softening the entry, no fresh aromatic buffer to ease the transition. The whole structure leans into the materials it's built from. The spices arrive with a dry, almost peppered heat that never quite cools off.
What's unusual here is the pyramid structure. Patchouli appears in all three layers. Not as a supporting note, as the architecture. TestoX makes it the load-bearing wall, the material that holds the whole composition up. The spices and birch tar give it surface and smoke, but patchouli is what's underneath, woven through from the opening to the final drydown. Oud adds depth in the base, settling in alongside the tar rather than competing with it. The result is a scent that smells like one continuous gesture rather than a journey through phases.
The evolution
On skin, TestoX doesn't so much evolve as deepen. The spices arrive first, almost immediately. No soft entry, no polite citrus opening. You're in the spiced-leather space within minutes. Patchouli follows close behind, a mustiness-free version, more mineral than earthy, almost clear. The birch tar emerges as the spices settle, bringing campfire char, the smell of something burned but not ruined. The oud appears last, quiet at first, then growing louder through the middle hours. The composition has a way of settling into a warm patchouli-oud pocket as it wears. The tar recedes but doesn't disappear entirely, leaving a faint smoky thread that runs underneath everything. The spices lose some of their initial sharpness and become rounder, more integrated with the resinous base.

TestoX belongs to a category of dense, smoke-laden compositions that prioritize material intensity over accessibility. Wearers tend to reach for it in colder months, where the tar and oud can develop without competing against heat or humidity.
