The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Zuhal is Saturn in Arabic, the distant planet that moves unhurried through its orbit, steady and enduring. Amouage named this fragrance for that quality. Released in 2026 as part of The Essences Collection, Oud Zuhal is a study in time and maturation built around oud as its central material. The house gave the composition a 30% perfume oil concentration and weeks of maceration before bottling, a process that lets the oud express itself fully, from the first sharp spice hit to the deep, warm drydown hours later.
What makes Oud Zuhal distinctive is its patience. Most oud fragrances rush to the resinous heart; this one lingers in each phase, letting the smoky, animalic facets of Assam oud transition naturally into the smoother, rounder Indonesian oud that anchors the base. The 30% oil concentration isn't just a strength claim, it's what allows the fragrance to hold its structure across an 8-10 hour arc without thinning out or losing coherence. Three peppers and cardamom open the composition, but they're a gateway, not a destination.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes are all business, cardamom and three peppers (black, pink, a slight heat) arrive sharp enough to assert presence before the oud has even introduced itself. Around the thirty-minute mark, Assam oud enters the conversation, darker and smokier, pulling the fragrance toward resinous territory. The patchouli adds an earthy counterweight that keeps things grounded rather than lifted. By the second hour, the composition has shifted entirely: Indonesian oud and amber take over, warmer and rounder, the smoky edges softened into something that sits close to the skin. The drydown holds for hours, not a quiet fade but a steady, unhurried presence that lingers well into the next morning on fabric.
Cultural impact
Oud Zuhal is a limited-edition release exclusive to GCC member states, part of Amouage's The Essences Collection. The fragrance has earned strong marks for scent quality and longevity on enthusiasts, though value-for-money scores suggest the price point gives some buyers pause. Wearers consistently note the assertive spice opening and the long, unhurried drydown as its defining characteristics.
