The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Trick or Treat earns its name from the way it balances sweetness and edge, a composition built on contrast. The concept is autumn distilled: bright citrus, bold licorice, warm vanilla, and a hint of spice. For an indie house like Alkemia, the naming of a fragrance is part of the story. "Trick or Treat" works on two levels: the playful seasonal invitation, and the anise bite that waits beneath the sugar. It's a fragrance that dresses up, but keeps something hidden underneath.
Black licorice is unusual in Western perfumery. It's common in Mediterranean and Eastern traditions, but here it's the star, not the accent. The candied ginger adds a clean, sharp heat that cuts through the gourmand sweetness, almost like spice without fire. Mandarin zest lifts the opening so it doesn't settle into pure dessert. The patchouli and oakmoss in the base keep the drydown from going flat, adding an earthy counterweight that makes the sweetness worth staying with.
The evolution
The opening hits fast, mandarin zest and black licorice arrive together, and the combination is immediate. Bright citrus, then anise, then the realization that this is not a polite fragrance. That opening lasts a solid thirty minutes before the sweetness starts to soften. The heart is where Trick or Treat earns its name: bourbon vanilla, caramel, and brown sugar pour in, warm and gourmand, while cedar needles and sandalwood keep it from becoming pure sugar. Patchouli anchors everything beneath. By the drydown, the licorice has faded to a whisper and tonka bean takes over, quiet, creamy, close to the skin. The sillage drops off significantly in the final hour. On most skin types, expect 6-8 hours, with the first two being the strongest projection.
Cultural impact
Trick or Treat occupies a specific niche: the bold, seasonal indie fragrance that fans seek out when autumn arrives. The black licorice note is its defining characteristic and its dividing line, wearers either find it compelling and unique or too medicinal for daily wear. Among Alkemia's catalog, which spans incense-rich compositions like Epicée Bohème and gourmand explorations like Patchouli Cacao, this one leans into playful sweetness without losing the house's signature edge.
