The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Formless emerged from a single provocation: Byredo Pulp had built a cult following around the idea of realistic fruit, not fruit-flavored, but fruit as an experience. Alexandria wanted to revisit that territory. Not to copy it, but to ask what else was possible when you started from the same premise and let the chemistry take over differently. The result is a fragrance that shares Pulp's DNA, fig, blackcurrant, the tart-sweet tension of an orchard at peak season, but pulls in a different direction. Where Pulp stayed airy and abstract, Formless goes for weight. For density. For the smell of fruit that hasn't been curated into a lifestyle concept.
The heart of Formless is fig, and fig is a tricky material. It carries two distinct aromatic personalities: the green, milky scent of the leaf and sap, and the deep, jammy sweetness of the ripe fruit itself. Most fragrances pick one. Formless holds both, letting them exist in tension throughout the wear. The supporting cast makes it work. Blackcurrant adds a sharp, almost acidic top note that keeps the sweetness honest. Red apple brings crunch, a textural counterpoint to the soft, yielding fig. Praline threads sweetness through the middle without becoming dessert. And cardamom, warm, slightly smoky spice, keeps everything grounded in something that reads as woody rather than purely fruity.
The evolution
Bergamot and cardamom hit the skin together, the citrus bright and immediate while the spice arrives already warm, already there. Blackcurrant follows, tart and insistent. Then fig, green at first, the smell of the leaf, latex-sticky and alive. The heart belongs to fig in its fullest expression. Ripe now, lactonic, almost creamy. The blackcurrant fades back into the fruit, no longer a solo voice but part of the chorus. Praline sweetens without softening. Tiare flower adds a tropical creaminess that flirts with sunscreen but never arrives. Peach blossom keeps it floral without losing the plot. The drydown is where cedar earns its place. Warm, slightly dry wood that grounds everything that came before. The cardamom returns here, finding its moment once the fruit begins to recede. The projection settles to moderate, present for the first two hours, then intimate, close to the skin. On fabric, cedar and the ghost of fig linger into the next morning.
Cultural impact
Formless by Alexandria Fragrances is a Unisex Aromatic Fruity fragrance launched in 2019. Positioned as an alternative to Byredo Pulp, it appeals to collectors seeking realistic fruit compositions without the typical sugary aesthetic. The fragrance leans into fig as a centerpiece, supported by blackcurrant, red apple, and praline, with cardamom and cedar providing warmth and depth. Ideal for daytime wear and spring-summer seasons, Formless delivers a 4-6 hour scent arc with moderate sillage, present without overwhelming, making it suitable for office and casual environments.
