The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Julien Rasquinet designed Solær around a single molecule, methyl laitone, that brings fig and coconut to the composition without the fragility of natural extracts. Methyl laitone delivers an opening that feels simultaneously fresh and warm, with the creaminess of coconut and the green, slightly milky sweetness of fresh fig. Rasquinet layered white flowers into the heart of the fragrance, jasmine and tuberose bringing a lush, enveloping floral presence. Vanilla and amber facets ground the composition, giving Solær a warmth that extends well past the initial spray. The combination of methyl laitone's lactonic character with the creamy vanilla and soft amber creates a scent that feels both bright and intimate, the kind of fragrance that invites you to linger in its presence.
Methyl laitone is the key. A synthetic molecule that the brand positions front and center, because it brings qualities that were difficult to achieve otherwise. Methyl laitone delivers a lactonic quality: the smell of fresh fig, a hint of coconut, a creamy sweetness that feels inviting rather than abstract. In Solær, this molecule anchors the composition. The white flowers, jasmine and tuberose, and the vanilla-sandalwood base exist to round it out, to give it depth and complexity as the hours pass.
The evolution
The opening features methyl laitone's lactonic sweetness, that fresh fig and coconut character. Bitter orange and peach keep it bright for the first few minutes, adding a citrus-fruity lift that complements the creamy sweetness. Then jasmine and tuberose arrive, the white flowers asserting themselves with presence and richness. The coconut note weaves through the florals, and the vanilla begins to emerge, adding warmth to the composition. Sandalwood enters beneath the florals, adding its creamy woodiness that supports the entire structure. Hazelnut lingers in the base, a quiet nuttiness that builds gradually. By the drydown, the florals have softened but the vanilla and sandalwood remain, holding the composition together. Methyl laitone stays present throughout, that distinctive fig-coconut character threading from first spray to the final hours.
Cultural impact
Solær has found an audience among wearers who appreciate its lactonic, powdery character. Those who remember the specific smell of vintage sunscreens recognize that quality immediately. The synthetic origin appeals to some who discover that creamy vanilla and coconut notes win them over, creating a scent that feels both familiar and distinctly modern. The fragrance occupies a space that feels nostalgic without being dated, inviting wearers to revisit memories through a contemporary lens.
