    The Story of Polish potato

An earthy, unexpected accord that captures the grounded aroma of damp earth and waxy tuber skin. Not a literal vegetable note, but a warm, gourmand interpretation that has turned heads in niche perfumery.

    Heritage

The concept of a potato-scented perfume emerged from Polish perfumer Michał Gilbert Lach, who drew on childhood memories of visiting local markets in small-town Poland during the 1980s. The unassuming vegetable, essential to Polish cuisine and cultural identity, became an unlikely muse for a luxury fragrance. Bohoboco, the Warsaw-based niche house founded in 2009, released the fragrance in its 2016 fragrance line, which already included the popular Polish Breakfast. The scent challenged conventions about what perfume should smell like. Rather than relying on florals or orientals, it rooted its identity in something ordinary yet culturally resonant. The launch attracted international press coverage, introducing audiences outside Poland to the idea that humble ingredients can carry profound olfactory meaning.

"The fragrance took inspiration from actual trips to 1980s Polish vegetable markets, not from any commercial potato aroma compound."

    Production

    How Polish potato Is Made

Polish Potato as a fragrance concept is built around a crafted accord rather than a single extracted material. The perfumer combines natural earthy materials—typically a base of patchouli, vetiver, or iris root—that when layered together, evoke the moist, waxy character of a raw potato and its earthy growing environment. These materials are sourced from established suppliers and blended to create a cohesive sensory image. No actual potato is used in the formulation. The result is a high-impact, conversation-driving note that functions as an artistic statement in fragrance composition.
