Heritage
A house, in its own words
The story of VIA DEI MILLE SICILIA begins in the 1950s in the town of Noto, located in the southeastern tip of Sicily. During this period, Salvatore Scorsonelli established an artisanal fragrance distillery on Via dei Mille, the street that would later inspire the brand name. The Noto of that era was described in contemporary accounts as a place where nature remained largely intact, surrounded by the baroque architecture that defines the town today. Scorsonelli focused on producing flower essences, particularly those derived from jasmine and other indigenous Sicilian botanicals that thrived in the region's Mediterranean climate. This work laid the foundation for what would become a sustained family tradition spanning multiple generations. Stefano Alderuccio was born in Siracusa, another historic city in eastern Sicily, and grew up immersed in this world of botanical extraction and fragrance creation. As he came of age, he developed his own approach to perfumery while maintaining deep connections to Sicilian raw materials. Eventually relocating to France, Stefano gained exposure to different currents within European niche perfumery while continuing to draw inspiration from his Sicilian roots. He founded his own fragrance company, Fragrances Essentielles, before establishing VIA DEI MILLE SICILIA as a distinct platform for expressing the botanical heritage of his homeland. The brand name itself serves as both geographic reference and homage to the origins of the family enterprise, anchoring the contemporary work in a specific place and tradition. VIA DEI MILLE SICILIA operates from the premise that Sicily possesses an extraordinary palette of aromatic materials that have been underexplored in contemporary perfumery. Stefano Alderuccio approaches his craft with an appreciation for what he describes as productive tension between tradition and modernity. This philosophy became explicit with the 2020 release of Dolce Kaos, which the brand characterizes as emerging from a short circuit, a deliberate collision between opposing ideas. The concept of sweet chaos suggests an embrace of contradiction rather than its resolution, reflecting a belief that meaningful fragrance arises from unexpected combinations. Alderuccio's dual existence between Sicily and France shapes this perspective, giving him an outsider's clarity when examining Sicilian olfactory traditions while maintaining insider knowledge of their authentic character. The brand resists the temptation to treat heritage as mere nostalgia or decoration, instead asking how historical materials and methods can speak to present concerns. Each fragrance emerges from questions about what a particular ingredient or idea can become when placed in new context, rather than simply reproducing familiar associations. The family dimension of the work reinforces this approach, connecting individual creativity to collective memory and ongoing dialogue with those who came before.
