The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Taboo Games arrived in 2021 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, a line built around the house's core practice of reinterpreting well-known compositions. The fragrance takes its name from the idea of forbidden play, the games people only start when the night gets long and the conversation turns private. The house positioned it as a floral fruity gourmand, a category that already promised seduction, but layered it with a tension between innocent fruit and something darker underneath. Bulgarian rose, bourbon geranium, and jasmine give it the romantic architecture. Honey, vanilla, and opoponax anchor the base with a low, sweet burn. Cinnamon threads through every phase like a dare. It is, in effect, a study in how sweetness can flirt without losing its nerve.
What makes the composition interesting is how the gourmand and floral halves refuse to behave. The fruit opens bright, almost edible, then the Bulgarian rose arrives and refuses to stay in the background. Bourbon geranium adds a green, slightly bitter edge that keeps the sweetness honest. The opoponax, often overlooked in this kind of blend, contributes a resinous warmth that bridges the floral heart and the vanilla-honey base, preventing the drydown from collapsing into pure confection.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are loud. Plum, peach, and apple arrive almost simultaneously, drowned in cinnamon, the kind of opening that fills a small room before you've buttoned your coat. The fruit softens around the forty-minute mark, and Bulgarian rose pushes through, joined by jasmine and bourbon geranium. This is where the composition shows its cards: the floral heart isn't shy, and the honey underneath gives it a syrupy pull. From the two-hour mark onward, the fruit and florals recede together, leaving vanilla and opoponax to do the long work. The drydown is quieter than the opening suggests, warm and resinous, with the cinnamon still flickering underneath. On fabric, the vanilla outlasts everything else. The next day, a scarf smells like spiced cream.
Cultural impact
Taboo Games sits squarely in the dupe economy's sweet spot, a fragrance that borrows the silhouette of a high-end forbidden-games composition and rebuilds it in a more accessible format. The fragrance earns attention not for originality but for delivering the full-bodied warmth and floral-fruity drama of its inspiration. Wearers tend to be fragrance enthusiasts already familiar with the original, seeking the same mood without the boutique markup. It's a practical choice dressed in velvet.
