The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Latin Tabacum: Cuba Edition is The Dua Brand's tribute to Ormonde Jayne's Montabaco line, specifically the Montabaco Cuba release. The Dua Brand built this composition as an accessible alternative, an Extrait de Parfum that captures the spirit of the source without the boutique price tag. The mission here wasn't to reinvent the wheel. It was to get the proportions right, the sweetness balanced, the tobacco in its proper place. What's immediately clear on skin is how deliberate the construction feels. The opening citrus notes cut bright and clean, almost deceptively light, before the composition tilts toward its warmer heart. Magnolia, tea, and Iso E Super arrive as a soft atmospheric haze, woody and vaguely aromatic, smoothing the transition between the airy top and the grounded base.
What makes this composition work is the negotiation between two opposing forces: bright citrus aromatics and dense, resinous warmth. Bergamot, mandarin orange, and juniper lift the top with a clarity that keeps the tobacco from sinking into pure gourmand territory. Meanwhile, vanilla absolute and tonka bean provide a sweetness that wraps around Iso E Super and sandalwood, giving the woody base a velvety texture instead of a dry one. The inclusion of suede and leather notes adds a tactile dimension, the feeling of running a hand over a well-worn jacket. Tobacco here is the protagonist, but it's a tobacco that needs company, and every other note earns its seat at the table.
The evolution
The opening is almost deceptive. Bergamot and mandarin orange cut through with a brightness that suggests something far lighter than what actually shows up. Juniper adds a clean, slightly herbal edge while freesia and jasmine keep the florals crisp rather than powdery. This is the citrus phase, and it's confident, almost cocky in how fresh it feels. But underneath, the tobacco is already loading. As the composition develops, the bright top recedes and the heart takes over. Magnolia, tea, and dry wood form a transitional landscape, aromatic but grounded. Iso E Super does its signature trick, creating a woody softness that feels more like atmosphere than a distinct note. Suede and leather emerge, adding warmth without weight. The tobacco finally announces itself fully, rich, slightly sweet, and unmistakably present. In the final phase, the drydown settles into its lasting form.
Cultural impact
Latin Tabacum: Cuba Edition sits in a specific lane: tobacco-leaning compositions inspired by Ormonde Jayne's Montabaco Cuba. It draws in wearers who want a refined tobacco-leaning scent with the presence of an Extrait de Parfum. The opening has just enough brightness from bergamot and mandarin orange to keep things from collapsing into heaviness, and the heart lands on suede, leather, and a fully announced tobacco note that carries real weight without ever tipping into sweetness overload. The base settles into vanilla absolute, tonka bean, sandalwood, and ambergris, giving the composition a soft, skin-adjacent finish that lingers for hours.
