The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Compass Rose landed in 2025 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, a line built around reimagining well-known scent profiles. The compass reference nods to navigation and the pull of cardinal directions, four winds carrying different things. This particular direction leads somewhere warm and woody, with Bulgarian rose at the helm and Italian iris mapping the terrain.
Three rose expressions stack at the top, each one bringing its own particular weight and lift to the composition. The interplay creates a layered effect, a full bouquet impression that reads as both generous and restrained depending on where your nose lands. Rose opens plush and full, carrying that dense, almost waxy petal quality that gives the heart its body. Beneath that floral wave sits Italian iris, and it does something essential.
The evolution
The opening arrives with the full force of three rose expressions layered over one another, and there's an immediate plushness to it, a density that reads almost edible before it resolves into proper florality. The rose comes through with that waxy, petal-rich quality, slightly jammy in its sweetness, and it fills the air with a generous, enveloping presence that doesn't apologize for its own volume. As the first minutes pass, the Italian iris begins to surface, and it shifts the temperature. The iris introduces something cool and powdery, a rooty mineral note that cuts across the rose like a clean line drawn through soft fabric. It doesn't fight the florality so much as it disciplines it, introducing structure where the rose alone might have remained formless. The interplay between these two forces creates the central tension of the composition.
Cultural impact
Compass Rose enters the conversation as a deliberate exercise in single-flower composition, and its structure reflects a kind of patience that's become valuable in modern perfume. Rather than chasing trend cycles or piling on novelty, the composition commits to a traditional floral narrative and lets that narrative breathe. The use of three distinct rose expressions layered together reads as an act of serious intent, a refusal to simplify what rose can be into a single monolithic note. Instead, the fragrance leans into complexity within a single flower family, building depth through layering rather than through variety of materials.
