A house, in its own words
Renato Balestra was born in 1924 and trained as a painter before moving into fashion design. Sources indicate he began his fashion career around 1953, eventually opening his first atelier in Rome in 1959. The company registered the Renato Balestra brand name in 1973. Unlike many Italian fashion houses that established fragrance lines early, Balestra waited until 1978 to launch its first perfume, Balestra, developed in partnership with Industrie Cosmetiche Riunite. The fashion house maintained continuous operation through Balestra's lifetime, with his active involvement extending well beyond typical retirement ages. His death in November 2022 marked the end of an era for the family-controlled label. The company has continued operating from its Roman base, recently introducing new fragrance expressions including unisex formulations. Balestra's career spanned nearly seven decades of fashion design, from the 1950s through 2022. Renato Balestra's approach to fashion drew heavily on his painterly training. The designer described his work as combining rigorous construction with fluid femininity, often using the term to suggest garments that moved like brushstrokes across the body. The brand's fragrance philosophy appears to reflect this visual foundation, with perfumes designed as sensory extensions of the fashion aesthetic rather than standalone commercial products. The house prioritized timelessness over trend-chasing, with the Renato Balestra Pour Homme remaining in production for decades after its 1982 launch. Several Balestra fragrances have been characterized as chypre or woody compositions, suggesting a preference for structured, long-lasting scents over fleeting trends. The brand's longevity and continued family operation indicate a commitment to maintaining design principles established by its founder rather than pursuing rapid expansion.
