The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Black XS line began in 2005, a bold statement from a house not known for subtlety. By 2013, the family had grown through iterations exploring excess and desire. Then came Potion in 2014. Olivier Cresp and Emilie Coppermann built it around juniper, cashmere wood, wormwood, rum, and labdanum. The composition centers on a blend of aromatic and resinous materials that create unexpected connections between crisp, green notes and deeper, warmer elements. Juniper provides the initial lift while wormwood introduces an unexpected bitter dimension that sets this fragrance apart from more conventional approaches to masculine scent.
What makes Potion unusual is the wormwood. Absinth's bitter edge sits in the heart, not the opening, and it doesn't apologize for itself. Here it stays sharp, medicinal, almost austere against the warmth of rum and labdanum. That tension, bitter against sweet, herbal against resinous, is where Potion lives. Cashmere wood does the quiet work of softening everything around it without disappearing. The wormwood note persists through the heart phase, refusing to dissolve into background noise.
The evolution
Juniper arrives first. Crisp, clear, almost gin-like in its sharpness. This is the moment of first impression, immediate and confident. Within minutes the wormwood emerges, cutting through the brightness with something drier and more complex. The cashmere wood follows, wrapping warmth around the bitter edge. As hours pass, rum takes over. Sweet, a little boozy, undeniably warm. The labdanum lingers close to the skin, a honeyed, slightly smoky resin that stays intimate and skin-close through the drydown. The progression feels deliberate, each note taking its turn before yielding to the next. What begins as bright and aromatic settles into something richer, the rum note deepening while the labdanum provides a finish that feels smooth and resinous. The overall effect is of a fragrance that changes character throughout the day without ever losing coherence.
Cultural impact
The absinth-wormwood note became Potion's defining characteristic. This unusual ingredient choice set it apart from many contemporaries in the designer fragrance space. The bitter, herbal quality provides an aromatic signature that remains memorable throughout the wear. Unlike fragrances that rely on familiar accords, Potion commits to its distinctive direction, making it a choice for those seeking something beyond conventional masculine scents. The composition demonstrates that designer fragrances can explore unconventional territory without sacrificing wearability.
