The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Añoranza means yearning, a word for the ache of wanting something distant, real or imagined. The brand conjures the Havana that exists only in a dream: air thick with mysterious anticipation, a rhythmic energy pulsing through the streets, joyous laughter echoing off cobblestones. This is a fragrance about wanting somewhere you have never been, or maybe a place you remember wrong. Gino Percontino built it around that tension, the cool of mint against the warmth of rum, jasmine opening into vetiver, salt on skin after dancing. From the first note, it was designed to feel like a memory you had forgotten you possessed.
The unusual structure is what makes it work. Mint at the opening isn't typical in a floral-rum composition, it acts as a cooling agent, a breath of fresh air against the tropical sweetness that follows. The night-blooming jasmine isn't the polite, inoffensive kind. It has presence, a heady quality that builds as the mint fades. And then there's the salt. Percontino has said the salty element is his favorite part, it evokes dancing, sweating, being close together. A mineral coolness that isn't masculine or feminine, just honest. The bourbon vetiver brings a smoky, leathery depth that grounds the florals and rum into something wearable rather than abstract.
The evolution
Mint opens the fragrance, providing an airy quality that feels like a breeze through an open window. Jasmine arrives and the florals take over fully. Night-blooming jasmine, mariposa lily, a hint of white ginger lily. This is the heart of the fragrance, warm and romantic. The florals dominate here, with the jasmine character fully present. Rum is here too, present underneath the florals, giving a sense of warmth and movement. The coconut is here too, soft underneath, keeping everything smooth. As time passes, the mint recedes and the base notes move forward. Bourbon vetiver, salt, tobacco leaf. The drydown is mineral and smoky, close to skin, intimate. The salt lingers longest, that memory of dancing, of being close. It stays quiet for hours after the projection fades, just you and the ghost of a warm night.
Cultural impact
Añoranza carved a unique space in the fragrance landscape. The combination of white florals, rum, and coconut creates a warm heart that distinguishes it from more conventional offerings. The salt-vetiver combination gives it a mineral quality that sets it apart from many other fragrances. Though discontinued, it has attracted a devoted following among those who seek out Phlur's more conceptually driven releases. The fragrance resonated with people drawn to white florals who find standard jasmine too straightforward, and with those wanting warmth without excessive sweetness.
