The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Tides arrived in 2022 from One Seed, Liz Cook's fragrance house, and it reads as her answer to something she clearly loves: the coast. Not a postcard version, but the real thing, the one with wind and brine and the way salt settles on bare arms after a swim. The fragrance carries the specific mood of a place Cook knows intimately, translated through natural materials, with nothing synthetic standing between the plant and the skin. The opening hits with that cold slap of sea air, salty and clean, almost wet against the collarbone, before settling into something warmer and more human. Sage and green tea slice through the first few minutes with a green, vegetal coolness that feels less like an herb garden and more like coastal scrub after rain.
What sets Tides apart is the discipline of working only with naturals to achieve a salt-skinned, ocean-fresh feel, and the formula shows that constraint in every choice. Instead of leaning on synthetic marine molecules to fake the ocean, the composition uses sea salt and ambrette seed, letting the ambrette's warm, musky, almost fig-like softness do the heavy lifting. That warmth gives the salt a skin to land on, prevents the whole thing from reading as cold and abstract.
The evolution
The opening belongs to the salt. Bright, cool, almost wet, with sage and green tea cutting through like sea air moving over a garden. The salt note is the loudest thing in the first stretch, mineral and sharp, almost crunchy on the skin, and it reads more like a sensation than a scent. Then there's a shift. The magnolia surfaces with that creamy, lemony softness, and the whole composition reads like a different fragrance: warmer, rounder, more floral than marine. That middle phase is the gentlest part, where the green sharpness softens and the magnolia's buttery, sunscreen-sweet character takes the lead. The driftwood and ambrette take over from there, grounding the composition into something woody and musky that stays at skin level for hours, pulling the salt and the florals down into something that reads as warmth and skin rather than ocean.
Cultural impact
Tides has earned recognition within the natural perfumery community since its 2022 launch, including a 2023 Silver award, a 2023 Certified Clean designation, and a 2024 Gold award. The fragrance wears as the scent of someone who doesn't need their fragrance to do the talking for them, a quiet, coast-influenced composition that rewards curiosity over spectacle. It reads less like a market product and more like a personal statement, the kind of choice that signals an independent streak rather than a trend.
