The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Wunder emerged from Mavemade's 2021 launch of nine modular unisex scents, each designed to stand alone or layer with others. The name, German for wonder, captures the brand's intent: fragrances that inspire delighted surprise. Perfumer Philip pine Courtière approached Wunder with a clear creative vision, choosing to anchor the scent around a single exotic fruit paired with comforting and edible supporting notes. The result reflects her preference for clarity over complexity, building a fragrance that makes an immediate impression without requiring careful analysis to appreciate.
Courtière chose litchi as the opening note because it offers something immediately recognizable yet distinctly exotic. Paired with almond milk, the composition gains a milky softness that prevents the fruit from feeling too sharp or one-dimensional. Caramel enters last, providing warmth that grounds the fragrance and ensures longevity on skin. The philosophy here is straightforward: each note serves a specific function, and tog ether they create a cohesive narrative from start to finish. The pairing avoids unnecessary complexity, trusting that three well-chosen ingredients can tell a complete story.
The evolution
The Wunder experience begins with litchi, a fruit prized for its bright, translucent sweetness and subtle floral undertones. Courtière selected this note to deliver immediate impact, a confident opening that announces the fragrance without hesitation. As the top note softens, almond milk rises to take center stage, bringing a smooth, creamy quality that reshapes the scent's personality. This heart note introduces comfort without heaviness, a careful balance that keeps the fragrance accessible. The drydown belongs to caramel, a warm base note that extends the scent's presence and leaves a lasting impression of sweetness and depth. Each phase has distinct character, and the progression feels natural rather than forced.
Cultural impact
Wunder quickly became a favorite among fans of Mavemade’s modular system, praised for its ability to stand alone yet blend seamlessly with the brand’s other eight scents. Its sweet-creamy profile has been highlighted in niche-fragrance blogs as a go-to gourmand for layering, offering a versatile canvas that adapts to both day and night settings.
