The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
AS 01 arrived in 2012 as the launch composition from Lurk, the independent fragrance project of Anne Nelson Sanford. This particular bottle carries the alphanumeric code rather than a marketing name. The composition centers on a familiar flower, rose, but treats it with restraint uncommon in perfumery: natural ingredients only, blended into a base of organic jojoba oil rather than alcohol. What results reads less like a perfume announcement and more like a private notation. The 1/8 oz format is small, deliberate, and unapologetically quiet, a vessel sized for slipping into a bag or resting on a shelf without announcing itself.
What separates AS 01 from a hundred other rose fragrances is the material honesty underneath. The formulation relies on natural ingredients suspended in organic jojoba oil, a carrier that doesn't evaporate the way alcohol does. The result smells closer to crushed petals than perfumed air, and it wears in closer to the body. Cedar and cedarwood anchor the structure, spices supply the flicker of heat, and tuberose, a flower that doesn't always share the room politely, provides the narcotic undertow.
The evolution
On skin, the cold first half-hour reads green and almost metallic: rose otto character rather than rose sweetness, the kind of green that recalls stems and leaves more than petals. Then the spices push in. Not cinnamon-table warmth, but a drier heat, pepper-adjacent, almost like leaning over a candle just blown out. The tuberose blooms around the 90-minute mark, creamy and slightly indolic, and that's when the fragrance settles into its signature: a warm, woody-floral murmur that feels far more intimate than the opening suggested. The cedar base carries it through hours four and five, and the jojoba oil means the drydown never goes sharp or sour. What fades last is the rose itself, by then almost more of a memory than a note, clinging to the warmth of the wrist.
Cultural impact
LURK occupies a specific corner of independent perfumery where the focus stays on the composition itself rather than the branding around it. AS 01 fits that ethos precisely: oil-format, coded, unconcerned with mass appeal. The fragrance speaks to a kind of wearer who already knows what they like, who wants rose handled without sentimentality, and who appreciates the discipline of an alphanumeric label over a name designed to sell. It's a rose composition for people who have moved past the easy versions.
