The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
When Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud selected an extraordinary Assam oud from Bangladesh, his intent was singular: strip away everything decorative and leave only the raw material. Pur Oud, launched in 2021 as part of the Les Parfums Purs layering collection, is the result, a fragrance that asks what happens when you build around oud's most essential, unvarnished character rather than wrapping it in supporting notes.
The use of Helvetolide® and Ambrettolide, two synthetic musks often used in perfumery to extend and soften, is key here. These materials let Cavallier-Belletrud amplify the oud's natural animalic quality while keeping the composition cohesive over many hours. Rather than diluting the Assam oud, they frame it, allowing the core material to dominate without overwhelming in the opening minutes.
The evolution
The first spray is an event. Assam oud arrives uncut, resinous, slightly smoky, with an animalic edge that some wearers describe as confrontational. There's no gentle transition here; this is an introduction by announcement. Within thirty minutes, the Helvertolide and Ambrettolide begin their work, smoothing the rough edges into a creamier, warmer register. The oud doesn't disappear, it reorders itself. By hour two, you're wearing something quieter but no less present. The drydown settles into a skin-close warmth that carries well beyond what most testers expect, lingering into the next morning as a subtle, enveloping presence that announces itself only to those who lean in close. What started as a bold statement has transformed into something intimate, a quiet confidence that speaks volumes without raising its voice.
Cultural impact
Pur Oud occupies an unusual position in the luxury market: a mass-brand price point with a confrontational character more typical of niche oud houses. The community is divided. Some wearers describe it as the truest expression of real agarwood they've encountered in commercial perfumery. Others find the intensity alienating. What's consistent is the staying power, this is not a fragrance that whispers. It's built for someone who knows what they want from oud and isn't looking to compromise.
