The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Hayal, launched in 2023 by perfumer Alp Veliogulliari, steps in a different direction entirely. This is the house softening. Reaching for something delicate instead of bold. The katana motif runs through everything, but this scent moves away from the house's bolder signature. Instead, it reaches for something tender, even fragile. The fragrance opens with a crisp, almost translucent floral note that feels light and airy. As it settles, warmer elements emerge, wrapping the initial brightness in something softer and more intimate. It's a quiet turn for a house known for confident statements, and it works because of that restraint.
Lily of the valley is an unusual top note for a natural-focused house. It demands precision, that watery, green freshness can skew synthetic if the formulation wavers. The jasmine sambac heart brings warmth and a characteristic indolic richness, the kind that smells like petals at dusk rather than a perfume bottle. The real test of the formulation: do the florals thread into the drydown cleanly, or do they simply disappear? Here, they thread. The vanilla and amber arrive late, wrapping everything in warmth that stays.
The evolution
The opening hits first, lily of the valley with that clean, almost watery greenness. Striking clarity. Then jasmine sambac arrives, warmer, rounder, and the florals take over. For the next while, this is soft and sweet and floral-forward. No harsh edges. No sharpness. Then the base arrives: vanilla and amber settling into skin, wrapping the florals in something powdery and warm. The drydown is close to skin, intimate, but still present. On fabric, the vanilla can outlast the florals entirely. Some people say they catch a trace the next morning.
Cultural impact
Hayal marks a notable departure for Katana Parfums, a Turkish house that built its early reputation on bold oud-forward compositions. The fragrance leans into lily of the valley, a white floral note that brings a different sensibility to the house's portfolio. The limited-edition status adds exclusivity, while the floral orientation speaks to a softer, more delicate character that differs from the house's established identity. This shift toward gentler territory works because it steps back from intensity while maintaining the Turkish natural-perfumery heritage at the brand's core.
