Heritage
A house, in its own words
Bernard A. Mitchell and Barry Shipp founded Jovan in 1968 after Shipp left his position at Revlon. The two entrepreneurs set up a small production facility in Chicago, aiming to create affordable, high‑quality colognes for everyday consumers. Their first launch, a simple musk oil, arrived in 1972 and quickly gained attention for its clean, lingering aroma. In 1973 the company expanded the line with Jovan Musk for Men, a spray version that entered drugstore shelves across the United States. The early 1980s saw Jovan broaden its portfolio with gender‑specific offerings such as Andron For Women (1982) and the sculptural scent Sculptura (1981). By the mid‑1990s the brand introduced Fresh Musk (1996), a lighter take on the original musk theme that appealed to a new generation of shoppers. Throughout the 2000s Jovan continued to refresh its catalogue, collaborating with perfumers like Murray Moscona and Coty to launch niche scents while maintaining the core musk identity. The most recent addition, released in 2025, demonstrates the brand’s willingness to experiment with modern accords while honoring its heritage. Jovan’s journey from a Chicago workshop to a name recognized in fragrance aisles reflects a steady commitment to accessible scent experiences rather than flash‑driven trends. Jovan approaches perfumery with a focus on everyday relevance. The brand believes that fragrance should enhance daily routines without demanding special occasions. It prioritizes clarity of scent, allowing each note to be perceived without overwhelming the wearer. Jovan’s product development process emphasizes consumer feedback, often testing new compositions in regional markets before wider release. Sustainability enters the conversation through selective sourcing of raw materials, and the company reports that it prefers suppliers who follow responsible harvesting practices. Rather than chasing fleeting fashion statements, Jovan aims to create scents that become familiar companions, supporting personal confidence and subtle self‑expression.
