The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Wave 2 arrived in 2017 as part of Hollister's fragrance collection. The brand had been developing aquatic-fresh compositions, each one an attempt to create a distinct mood. Wave 2 took the aquatic-fresh template that Hollister had been refining and pushed it toward something with more texture. White pepper and air accord in the top gave it an opening that felt like open sky, not just another citrus shot. The perfumers worked with that constraint, layering geranium and sage against a woody-musky base that kept the whole thing grounded long after the salt air faded. There was a mineral quality to the bergamot that kept things sharp without tipping into sweetness. The combination of white pepper and air accord created an almost stinging freshness that felt clean and immediate.
What makes Wave 2 work is the tension between its top and base. The opening is all brightness and air, bergamot and white pepper give it an almost mineral sharpness that reads as clean without being sterile. That air accord is doing heavy lifting here, creating space in the composition where most fragrances crowd in. Then the heart takes over: lavender water and sage shift the energy from sharp to herbal, a quiet hand-off that keeps the fragrance from feeling one-note. By the time the sandalwood and musk arrive in the base, the composition has aged into something warmer, woodier, and considerably more intimate.
The evolution
The opening begins with bergamot and white pepper arriving together, the pepper immediately asserting itself, not aggressive, but present. There's a clean, almost ozonic quality from the air accord that lifts the whole thing skyward. Then the geranium and sage take over, and the fragrance shifts. It becomes quieter, greener, the sage adding a slightly bitter herbal edge that cuts through any sweetness that might otherwise emerge. The heart is steady and unassuming. The drydown is where Wave 2 earns its keep. Sandalwood and musk arrive late, settling close to the skin in a way that transforms the whole composition from fresh-aquatic to something with warmth and weight. By the end, you're left with a soft woody-musky trace, barely there, but unmistakable if you're paying attention.
Cultural impact
Wave 2 sits in a crowded lane of aquatic fragrances. What separates it from many in its category is the white pepper opening and the herbal heart, which give it a distinctive character. The composition relies on a clean, almost ozonic quality from the air accord that lifts the whole thing skyward. There's a mineral quality to the bergamot that kept things sharp without tipping into sweetness. The combination of white pepper and air accord created an almost stinging freshness that felt clean and immediate.
