The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Desert Rosewood arrived in 2016 from François Merle-Baudoin. The name points to Palisander rosewood, a prized timber that grows across the continent's interior. Baudoin worked with benzoin and vanilla, combining them with a flash of Sicilian mandarin at the top. The mandarin opens the composition with bright citrus that cuts through the richness beneath. As it settles, the rosewood emerges, dry and warm, while the benzoin adds a balsamic sweetness that feels almost tactile, like sun-warmed wood. The vanilla threads through, providing warmth without overt sweetness. The result reads as warm and resinous from the first spray, with the various elements intertwining throughout the wear.
What sets Desert Rosewood apart is its restraint with spice. Cardamom appears here in a way that feels integrated rather than isolated, threading through the composition with subtle presence. The Siam benzoin brings a balsamic sweetness that reads as almost tactile, like the warmth of sun-baked wood. Vanilla appears as a warm undertone that keeps the rosewood from reading as merely dry wood. Patchouli brings earthiness to the base, adding depth and preventing the overall effect from feeling one-dimensional.
The evolution
The opening arrives with mandarin's citrus brightness before the cardamom and rosewood establish themselves. That first phase feels lighter than the drydown suggests, citrus, a whisper of spice, something almost green from the false sandalwood. Then the benzoin takes over. The shift is noticeable: the composition deepens, becomes denser, more resinous. The vanilla appears as a warm undertone that keeps the rosewood from reading as merely dry wood. As time passes, the patchouli settles into the base and the fragrance becomes something intimate, close to the skin. The various notes continue to interact as the hours progress, with the warm resinous character remaining present throughout. On fabric, the scent can linger, leaving a faint warmth that may be noticed the following day.
Cultural impact
Desert Rosewood appeals to enthusiasts who appreciate its warm resinous character. The benzoin-vanilla combination creates a distinctive drydown, while the woody base provides depth and complexity. The fragrance rewards proximity, with those who connect with it finding it warm and lingering. It sits in a space that feels both distinctive and grounded, offering something that differs from more conventional approaches to warm, resinous perfumery.
