Francois Merle-Baudoin
Born into the storied streets of Grasse, François Merle-Baudoin carries the weight of five generations of perfumers behind him. His grandfather founded the family house, weaving perfumery into the very fabric of the Baudoin lineage. From childhood, fragrance was not a career choice but a birthright, an inheritance absorbed through osmosis rather than instruction. After formal training, Merle-Baudoin spent over two decades refining his craft at SARL Creative Scents, later lending his expertise to Senses International, where he developed everything from home care formulas to food-grade scents. He eventually founded his own line, Dermalume, before joining Fragrance Du Bois, where his classical training found its fullest expression. His partnership with Goldfield & Banks Australia introduced his sensibility to a new generation of fragrance collectors, proving that old-world heritage can translate seamlessly into contemporary perfumery. Merle-Baudoin remains based in Grasse, where the limestone hills and薰衣草fields continue to inform his nose.

How Francois composes
Merle-Baudoin favors clarity and structure over complexity for its own sake. His work with oud and rosewoods demonstrates a preference for dense, resinous materials handled with restraint, allowing the natural character of precious woods to speak rather than disappear beneath heavy construction. In his lighter compositions, he shows a deft hand with citrus and aromatic herbs, threading green, slightly bitter notes through contemporary bases to striking effect. He is known for compositions that read differently across skin types, revealing nuanced layers that reward patience and repeated wear. His signature lies in making classical materials feel urgent and modern without betraying their origins.
Philosophy
What drives Francois
Merle-Baudoin approaches each fragrance as a dialogue between tradition and necessity. He does not chase trends; he observes how people live, what they need, what brings them comfort. His philosophy centers on accessibility without compromise, believing that masterful raw materials should not be the exclusive province of the elite. He draws inspiration from the natural world surrounding his Provençal home, viewing Grasse not merely as a city but as a living archive of olfactory knowledge passed down through family generations. Every creation begins with a question: what should this smell like at its most honest? The answer guides him toward scents that feel inevitable rather than constructed.
